About the project
Masonry structures, including historic buildings, represent the vast majority of the European built heritage.
Many of these buildings are in a poor state of preservation due to material ageing and degradation and are located in the Mediterranean area where they are exposed to a severe seismic hazard.
Objectives and expected results
SMS-SAFEST aims to develop a radically new paradigm for SHM of existing masonry structures by proposing the novel smart masonry. Smart masonry is a synergistic combination of smart mortar layers and smart bricks, placed at selected critical locations within a masonry structure during a retrofit intervention.
